01/1 5/24 Fly Fishing Report for Yellowstone National Park – Firehole River Tips

The Firehole River provides excellent dry fly fishing as early as the season opening date. The water is usually warm enough for some species of aquatic insects to be hatching, thanks to the warmer geyser water. It is very accessible from the Northwest Corner of the park very close to Old Faithful not far from the town of West Yellowstone. The entire stream is easily accessible with mostly slow moving water but it also has some moderately fast runs and riffles in places. Most of it is surrounded by meadows with very few trees and bushes to make your casting a little tougher. It can demand well presented flies that look much like the real things because the trout normally get a good look at your fly. That is the main reason our Perfect Flies outperform the generic fly patterns. They closely resemble the real insects they imitate. Hiding your profile is usually required in order to keep from spooking the trout. Although wading is usually best, there are many areas of the stream where fishing from the bank is a better choice. There are lots of undercut banks and weed lines.
