07/02/22 Fly Fishing Report for Yellowstone National Park

Opening Days Fly Fishing Report – 07/02/22

The month of June, the first month of the opening season, has been a mess. Heavy rain combined with very warm air temperatures to cause a very major runoff. Lot of things were damaged. The West, South, and East entrances to the park are open again. The North and Northeast Entrances are closed due to damages from flooding. That written, please be advised that there are still a large number of good fly fishing options available.

Firehole River: Trout are being caught in the Firehole River. The stream is flowing at a normal level and clear. Dry fly fishing is very good in its thermal influenced waters. Hatches of Blue-winged olives, Pale Morning Duns and White Miller and Spotted Sedge Caddisflies are taking place. It will be a top destination for at least another week.

Gibbon River: The stream has returned to a normal level and the opportunity to catch good numbers of trout is very good. Spotted Sedge Caddis, Salmonflies, Blue winged olive and Pale Morning Duns are hatching making it another good destination.

Madison River: The Madison River is down to a little below a normal level with clear water. Nymphing stonefly imitations and caddis larvae are great options for the Madison. As with it two tributary streams, the Firehole and the Gibbon, it has good hatches of caddis, PMDs, and salmonflies taking place.

Check back as we continue to check out the other streams of the park.
