07/28/22 Fly Fishing Report for Yellowstone National Park

Fly Fishing Report – 07/28/22

The month of July is about over. It has been much better than the month of June. The fly fishing opportunity has improved throughout the month. The North and Northeast Entrances are closed due to damages from flooding. All other entrances are open. Conditions for the first two weeks of August will be similar to late July but the weather and water temperature should begin to cool some. The last part of August usually opens up more water with good opportunity.

Firehole River: Trout can be caught in uppermost section of Firehole River above Old Faithful including some of the small stream tributaries. The main Firehole River is too warm to fish well. The cooler weather expected for the last part of the month of August should improve the conditions.

Gibbon River: Most all of the Gibbon River except the very uppermost section is still too warm to fish well. The uppermost sections above the falls could be okay the last part of August.

Madison River: The Madison River is still too warm to fish.

Gallatin River: The Gallatin is producing good catches for our customers. Lots of good hatches are taking place.

Yellowstone River: The upper Yellowstone, Yellowstone River below the lake to the falls, the Yellowstone Canyon and the lower Yellowstone River are fishing well.

Gardner River: With the North Entrance closed, the Gardner isn’t a good option because of its distance from other entrances and damages from the flood.

Slough Creek, Soda Butte Creek and Lamar River: We haven’t been getting as many reports as we usually do. I’m sure it is due either to the long drive to get there with the Northeast entrance closed but the fly fishing opportunity should be excellent. The reports we are getting are all very good. There are good hatches taking place.

Bechler and Fall River: Few anglers and few reports have come out about it but it is one of the better destinations to fish at this time.

Lewis River and Snake River: Both the streams are offering good fly fishing opportunities. Both are near the South Entrance and easy to access but they do require a little hiking to get to the best they have to offer.

Check back as we continue to update the reports, hopefully more often.
