Fishing the Streams of the Park In September

September weather varies a lot depending on the section and elevation of the streams. The first part of the month is usually still warm and too warm in some areas. By the middle of the month you will begin to see much cooler weather and some streams that were too warm in August will be okay again. The most popular section is the Northwest corner or the Lamar valley area. The Firehole and Madison is usually too warm the first part of the month but getting okay near the middle of the month. Hatches will still be taking place but different from those of August. It will be even more important to match them correctly using Perfect Flies which look much like the real things. Many of our patterns were developed in the park. Grasshoppers, ants, and beetles can be important in the trout diet.
