Mountain Whitefish

Although it’s not the most sought after species in Yellowstone National Park, the mountain whitefish is a game fish. It can be found in many streams and will take flies readily. They seem to prefer nymphs and wet flies more so than dries, but they will take a dry every once in a while. The one in the photo took Angie a few minutes to land on a light tippet. It was caught in the Gallatin River where they are plentiful. Whitefish are strong fighters that provide a lot of fun for the fly-angler. Most anglers are upset to learn they have a whitefish on instead of a trout, but on some streams, if it were not for the whitefish, there would be little action.
