To Help You Plan Your next Yellowstone fly fishing trip – What is it usually like in June

Like I wrote in the last post, no one knows what the weather forecast will look like for the first day of the 2022 fishing season and that will be the biggest unknown factor especially at the first part of the month. As I also wrote, even so, there are many things you can count on. It is for certain that not all the streams in the park will be in good enough condition to have much opportunity of catching good numbers of trout. At the first part of June, most anglers will be staying in West Yellowstone, Montana, fishing the Firehole, lower Gibbons and Madison Rivers. There will be some anglers staying at the north end of the park in Gardiner and fishing the lower sections of the Gardner River.

Again, its advantage is being at a lower elevation, but more so, much of, if not the most of the water in the Firehole River comes from underground. This is the first stream you should consider fishing at the very first days of the season. Sections of the river can get crowded. The main reason is the fly shops sending anglers to certain areas of the stream and the other from getting good reports from anglers back in West Yellowstone during after hours as well as actually seeing them fishing in larger numbers in those certain areas. Thinking that is the only areas of the river that you can catch good numbers of trout is a huge mistake. The entire river below the major springs will be warm enough to catch good numbers of fish, even and maybe even the best at time, the Firehole Canyon from the Madison upstream to the falls. Anywhere along the river is usually good. Our advice is get away on the Firehole from the crowded areas. You will usually do better.

In our next article or post, I will go over the hatches, best strategies and flies to be using on the Firehole in June. Meantime, there is a lot of information on our Firehole River page in this site: Click the following link for much useful information on this page.
